Learning and Teaching - Sponsored by Dized

I can't wait for Monday because this weeks #BoardGameHour chat is sponsored by Dized, the new board game teaching app. I am very excited by the creation of an App designed to help you learn and teach board games and so wanted to have a chat based on your experiences of this part of the board game hobby.

I for one learn and teach all the games in my group, so this could have a massive impact on me! I have always tried to lock down exactly how many people are coming to board game night, so that I can pick games in advance and either learn or re-learn the rules before they arrive. It hurts me to the core when someone drops out (or worse an extra person comes) and I feel like I need to change the game.

I often sit down with me partner and she asks to play this game or that and I have to say "yes lets play that... Just give me 20 minutes to look over the rules again cause I kind of remember them, but I'm likely to miss something". I love to just be able to say yes and just start the game.

I use Youtube to help me learn rules quite often. I use 3 main sources for videos about board games, The Dice Tower, Rodney Smith and Rahdo. The only problem I have with doing this is that it all takes time... I watch the videos (which are top notch) but I still feel I need to read the rule book!

Then you have to Teach the rules to your group...

Teaching board games is not easy... Do you have tips to keep people engaged? How long to you spend preparing for a game night? Whats the worst rule mistake you have mad?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

This week #BoardGameHour will be about learning and teaching games. The folks behind Dized, Playmore Games have inspired this chat, but the format is still the same and we will be chatting about the subject in the normal way :0)

To find out more about this cool new app go here: DIZED

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

If you have a question you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)

Come and join in our chat

#BoardGameHour is simply an hour long twitter chat all about board games (tabletop games). To join in all you have to do is be on twitter and add #BoardGameHour to your tweets so everyone can see what you are saying :0)

#BoardGameHour Start Time
Monday 11am PST - USA west coast time
Monday 2pm EST - USA east coast time
Monday 7pm GMT - UK time
Monday 8pm CET - Germany
Tuesday 3am AWST - Western Australia
Tue 5am AEST - Eastern Australia

Making it easier to take part in!

I generally used to use Nurph to host http://nurph.com/BoardGameHour (providing its working) but every now and then it goes down and causes problems.

If this happens, I recommend using http://twubs.com/boardgamehour or http://tweetchat.com/room/boardgamehour or Tweet Deck or Hootsuite to follow the hashtag chat. Of course you can just use twitter but sometimes the amount of #boardgamehour tweets can be challenging to keep up with.

Hope you can make it!

Crowd Funding and Artwork

This week we have two topics that are very close to my heart! You will see why below:

Crowd Funded Games

Crowd funding board games is part of my day to day life. Some of you may know that I offer marketing services and advice to board game companies through my company Wilderland Campaigns. This more often than not involves Kickstarter. Not only that but I am also someone who likes to put spare cash into interesting Kickstarter board games. Crowd funding has become a big part of the board game world and has changed immensely over the last 5/10 years or so.  Is Kickstarter a force for good in the gaming world? Would you publish a game via crowd funding? I look forward to reading your answers on Monday.

Artwork in games

I am a graphic designer and have an eye for art, but would never claim to be an artist. Despite that Artwork in games is so important for me. I love games that look great and really struggle to get into games that are not aesthetically pleasing to me.  What artists do you like? How important is artwork in board games?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

Celtic Theme and Memory

As some of you may know I have been on holiday recently. Last week I was in Scotland and next week I am going to Ireland. My Celtic adventures have inspired your two #boardgamehour topics for this week:

Celtic Themed Games

The Celtic Nations which include Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall and Wales have a rich history and many myths and legends. It is a fertile area for board game design, but which games do it justice? Lets find out during the #BoardGameHour Twitter chat

Memory Games

I hope to remember my holidays for many years, but is using your memory something you like in board games? Which games does having a good memory give you an advantage? Should people be allowed to write down information when playing a board game?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)
