Games at the holidays and gifts

Games at the holidays
This time of year is all about Christmas for me. I know not everyone celebrates the same holidays but there are many holidays that this #BoardGameHour can be about

I don't have any games that scream Christmas but I do have games I tend to play at this time of year. I don't know how I would feel about a Christmas themed game. What if I wanted to play it during the summer?

Gift

The holidays are often about gifts. Do you get board games as gifts, do you give them? I love getting board games at Christmas but I have to pick them because my collection is not something anyone else has a lot of knowledge of. I sometimes give board games as presents but generally only to people who I know will enjoy them and don't have there own collection.

This year both my son and my partner have asked for expansions to games they love which is a total win for me!

I'd love from you on this topic.

Editions

I own Fury of Dracular (second edition), Brew Crafters (first edition), Thunderstone (first edition), Stronghold (first edition) to name a few...
Image result for twilight imperium 4th edition

I really don't like it when companies bring out the same game with a few fixes. In the video game world that would be an update and i'd be more than happy, but in the board game world I am left with two choices. Stick with what now seems like an inferior product or pay twice for one game.

My questions will be neutral in there asking, but I feel pretty strongly about this one... How do you feel about a new edition of a game coming out that you already own?

Conflict

When I say conflict, in this case I mean direct conflict. I'm not talking worker placement or drafting... I'm talking directly effecting another players game.

I have mixed feeling on this one. Part of me love it but part of me fears the bad blood it can but doesn't have to cause. I feel some direct conflict games have really push some social contacts and even break them at points.

Have you have had bad feelings after a conflict focused game?

Tactics vs Strategy and Licenced Games

Tactics vs Strategy

I often here tactics and strategy define basically as short term or instance decisions (tactics) and long term overarching choices / plans (Strategy).

I feel that they are different things but link together and can be hard to separate often. Some games have many tactical choices, "what is best to do this turn" and others have more long term planning. I like a good mix of both in my games but I'd love to hear what makes your tick :0)

Licenced Games

Licenced games are games that have intellectual properties attached to them. Back in the day most people would see a licence on a game and assume, more often than not correctly, that they would be poorly design games.

I think over the last few years this have shifted but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

This weeks topics are based on me playing Mysterium with my family over the weekend. It got me thinking about hidden information and also social interaction in board games.
Image result for mysterium board game polish
I think you will agree that most games have some form of hidden information. Games with perfect information tend to be very tactically and sometimes dry. Chess is a good example of a game with no hidden information, but I cant think of to many other games I love that don't have any hidden information. I'm interested to know what the right amount of hidden information gets your juices flowing.

Social interaction is the main reason I play board games, but I know that's not the case for everyone. What games allow the right amount of social interaction for you?

Chaos and Dice

I have been designing a game for quite a while at the request of my son called "That'snot Pumpkin Soup" which is about goblins in a food production factory making concoctions for other monsters. It's not original but the boy was only 4 when he came up with the idea so give him a break.

I have made a game with the theme and he likes is (mainly cause it has poop in it) but its a bit of a grind to play at the moment. Last night I was working on it and thought "this is lacking some chaos". In my head I have the feeling I want players to have... They should be spinning plates and hoping that everything doesn't come crashing down. But at the moment I have a more euro feel turn this colour cube into that colour until you get points.

I want to inject Chaos, but just the right amount.. And the topic is born!

Our second topic somewhat spawns of the back of the first. I often here people saying they don't like dice cause they are too random. I feel that this is incorrect, but I'd like to hear your views about dice.

Civilization Games and Cheating

This weeks #BoardGameHour topics are once again inspired by real life. for a long time now I have been in the process of selling my house. A couple of days ago the contracts where ready to be signed and then everything would have been done. On that day I got an email saying that the buyer wanted to pay me less money than was agreed months ago! I said that I felt cheated and that I needed time to think about it. The buyer then pulled out, leaving me in a terrible situation (after months of working toward selling). I could only think "if this was a board game I would do all I could to hurt you... I should not agree the sale out of princible... I cant reward cheating..."

So, our topics for this week are Cheating and Civilization games. I hope you enjoy and also that the people who where meant to be buying my house get kicked in the butt by karma!

Knights and Mash-ups

This weeks #BoardGameHour topics are:

Knights
Image result for knight

They are a topic close to my heart, but are they covered well in board gaming. I know there are a ton of games about medieval times, but how many have knights as proper characters. How many games make you feel like you are playing as a knight rather than just pasting on a weak theme?

Mash-up

This is all about smashing two things together to make one new one. It is done some times with music. If is often done in board game design, but I thought it would be good for us to have a play with mashing-up stuff during the hour!

Cuts and political games

This weeks #BoardGameHour topics are:

Cuts

This week and was moving house. I was moving in with my partner and her place is smaller than mine. I have taken pretty much all of my board games but today I had to get rid of some really old ones. It was not easy to have to cut games I grow up with. Some had to go into storage, some I took out components that I can use for designing and binned the other bits, others will go to charity.

Having to do this made me think about cuts and this topic was born

Political games
Image result for political board games

I love politics and I love board games... Do these two worlds collide enough? Not in my game collection. I'd love to play games about running elections, but am not aware of ones that would give me a really good feel (I have ran real life election campaigns so I'm very aware of the feel I want)

I hope we can have a nice chat about board games and politics without any fake news. P.S don't ask me about how I feel about Trump or Brexit or I will tell you hahahahhahah

Evolution & Augmented Reality

This weeks #BoardGameHour topics are:

Evolution

Image result for board game Evolution

Over time things evolve and get better. Survive of the fittest is all about adapt or die, so which path is board gaming taking?

Personally I think board games have made huge steps forward since the 70's and have the capacity to keep getting better. So many people I have introduced into gaming have fallen in love with a hobby they originally thought was boring.

My tastes as a gamer are always evolving too. The more I teach games the more I want to play games that are easy to learn that have depth as the game goes on!

Augmented Reality

Literally adding to reality! How could be against it? Well the answer to that is quite a lot of old school gamers. I for one embrace our technological overlords. I can't wait to have board game computer game hybrids that do book keeping and rules for me. I want pieces dice and cards but I can wait for them to come to life on the interactive tabletop surface!

I just hope it happens widely before I get to old...

Imagination & Phases

This week we will be chatting about Phases, defined as:

"a distinct period or stage in a process of change or forming part of something's development."

Lots of things go through phases... Kids... The moon... politics... But do board games and more importantly board gamers?
Are other topic is imagination. I'd leave it up to you to think about what questions I will cover on that subject.

Darkness & Vikings

"The night is dark and full of terrors"... "in the absence of light darkness prevails"

The dark can be very provocative and stir primal emotions in even the most logic of people. Are darkness and light aspects that are used enough in board games? For me the answer is "no in my collection". Darkness seems underused for me and I'd like to work out why that is?

Vikings are at the other end of the scale, I feel they are used as a theme quite regularly, but often only as an overlay. I love the viking theme and yet I don't feel all games with the theme real capture the feel. I'd love to read your views on this!

200th #BoardGameHour

Our next chat will be the 200th I have ran! I love board games and I wanted to be able to chat with people about them on Twitter. I couldn't find any way to do that easily, so all those years ago, I started #Boardgamehour.

I suspected it would never take off, but after only a few weeks we were trending world wide. Everything has calmed down since those heady days, but I still am very proud of the community that takes part every week.

I love this weekly event, but it has not always been easy finding the time to run #BoardGameHour so I am using this milestone to think about if I want to keep it up. I'd love to hear your feedback about if #BoardGameHour in its current format is serving a purpose.

I needed to think of topics to match the occasion, so I am going with "Celebrations" and "Endings". I genuinely hope you have enjoyed my little part of the internet at some point over the last 200 #BoardGameHours . I know I have enjoyed reading your posts and have learnt so much about board gaming because of this weekly event.

Tile placement and maths

This weekend I introduced my son to Carcassone. He is only young and so every time we play a game it's his first time. My partner has been asking to play Isle of Skye for a couple of weeks, but each time I have been a little to tired to get it out. Today we wanted to play a game but I didn't feel my boy would be able to get his head around valuing the tiles for the bidding part of Isle of Skye so we start him out in tile placement with Carcassone. This seems like the right move and he enjoyed it.
This is why our first topic is tile placement games.

I love maths, but after a long day at work some games are a little to intense from a mathematics position. This can be working out optimum moves but more often its book keeping. I'd love to hear where you sit when it comes to maths in board game.

Consumption & Integrated theme

It is our last week of being sponsored by the new rule teaching app Dized. This week I asked for topics from the community. I got a few great request and have gone with two very different topics.

First we will start with Consumption, which will included games about food and drink. What designers and publishers you can't consume enough of and also how many new games you consume.

After that we will be talking about integrated themes. What I mean by this is how well games link there theme and mechanics. If a game has a really good integrated theme, the rules are easier to understand and the game is more fun. Is it something you look out for in games? How can designers integrated themes better?

If you have an question or topics you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)

Space and Set Collection

I like to give you glimpses into my board gaming life sometimes (cause I like you). Today I need to tell you about a topic that leads to some disharmony in my house. Space, the final frontier! It's a theme that when I was young I didn't really enjoy but as I have aged have come to love. I love the infinite possibilities, I love the lack of restrictions and I love the epic-ness that can come from a good sci-fi space opera.

Why does this topic cause unrest in my home then? Well because my partner really doesn't like the theme at all. Its a massive blockade for her. So games that I really enjoy like Cosmic Encounters, Battlestar Galactica and Eminent Domain are hard to get to the table. So it's with a heavy heart that I bring you a topic that is close to my heart but so distant from my table... Space games.

Our other topic is one that I am not in love with but feel can add something to some games. That is Set Collecting. I don't feel there is enough to the mechanic to make it the only part of a game, but as a part of a whole it carries its own. Do you agree with me? Come and join in later to see what other people think too.

If this happens, I recommend using http://twubs.com/boardgamehour or http://tweetchat.com/room/boardgamehour or Tweet Deck or Hootsuite to follow the hashtag chat. Of course you can just use twitter but sometimes the amount of #boardgamehour tweets can be challenging to keep up with.

Hope you can make it!
