Making it easier to take part in!

I generally used to use Nurph to host http://nurph.com/BoardGameHour (providing its working) but every now and then it goes down and causes problems.

If this happens, I recommend using http://twubs.com/boardgamehour or http://tweetchat.com/room/boardgamehour or Tweet Deck or Hootsuite to follow the hashtag chat. Of course you can just use twitter but sometimes the amount of #boardgamehour tweets can be challenging to keep up with.

Hope you can make it!

Taking Two Turns & Americana

Roll Again

I am making the leap of faith and am stepping #BoardGameHour up to be twice a week. Our original slot will stay exactly where it is (allowing the whole of the western world to take part at the same time), with a new slot added to help allow more people take part.

I'm calling the new slot #BoardgameHour #2ndTurn (no need to use the 2nd turn hashtag when you take part though). It will start Thursday 7pm PST, 10pm EST and should allow more Americans to take part. Our questions from the Monday's #BoardgameHour will be repeated giving people who can't make the original session the chance to chat about the same topic (unless you live in the UK like me in which case #2ndTurn starts at 3am)

I'm going to see how this works out, but the #BoardGameHour times for the next few weeks will be:

#1stTurn (Original Times)
Monday 11pm PST - USA west coast time
Monday 2pm EST - USA east coast time
Monday 7pm GMT - UK time
Monday 8pm CET - Germany
Tuesday 3am AWST - Western Australia
Tue 5am AEST - Eastern Australia

#2ndTurn
Thursday 7pm PST - Western USA
Thursday 10pm EST - Eastern USA
Friday 3am GMT - UK
Friday 4am CET - Germany
Friday 11am AWST - Western Australia
Friday 1pm AEST - Eastern Australia

MAIN TOPIC

"What will the main topic be this week?", I hear you ask. Well, in honor of making it easier for the fine folks in the US to take part in #BoardGameHour I thought we would take a look at "Americana" themed games this week.

What is Americana? Well in short it's "things strongly associated with the United States of America"

SIDE TOPIC
For a side topic, I thought we would talk about something close to my heart, which is wooden bits. I just love the feel of wood in my hands, so why not chat about it with the world.

Hope you enjoy the board game chat this week :0)

This weeks questions are:

Q1: What defines games with Americana theme to you?
Q2: Do you generally like games with an Americana Theme
Q3: Which games do you feel promote American culture (Americana) well?
Q4: If you want an Americana themed game night what games would you play?
Q5: Do you feel America produces the best board games? Why?
Q6: What aspects of American culture do you feel would make a good board game theme?
Q7: What board games tackle American history well?
Q8: Are there any publishers who focus on Americana theme?
Q9: What tips would you give to someone designing a board game for an American audience?
Q10: Side Topic: Do you like wooden components in board games?
Q11: Which game has the best wooden components?
Q12: Which is the best game that has wooden components?

Time Folk's Please

MAIN TOPIC
I have been thinking about how to allow more people to join in with #BoardGameHour. The time chosen for our weekly chat was picked to allow the whole of the western world to take part. So it's Morning on the west coast of the USA and evening in Eastern Europe at the current time. This was done because I like the idea of people from such a wide area chatting about the hobby they love. Having said that, it also means many people can't take part because of work or other engagements. This was always going to be the case, but I'm hoping to help with this situation. How?

Starting next week boardgamehour will run Twice a week! The topic will be repeated at a latter time later in the week. Watch this space for a full announcement later this week.

This brings me onto our topic for this week.. Which is Time.. Time is an important element in games so I have a range of questions to explore some aspects of it :0)

SIDE TOPIC
For a side topic I thought we would talk about games that are "new to you" E.G. games that have been around for a while but that you have just discovered.

Hope you enjoy the board game chat :0)

Monday 5th Dec 2016 questions are:

Q1: How much time do you send thinking about preparing for and playing board games?
Q2: What mechanisms represent the passing of time well?
Q3: How long have you been playing board games? How did you start?
Q4: What is your favourite game that takes place over many years (theme wise)?
Q5: How many hours can you play board games for in a day before you get fed up / tired?
Q6: What games go on to long / don't last long enough for you?
Q7: What are your farourite games that involve time in some way?
Q8: Are there any good time travel games? Should there be more?
Q9: What tips would you give to someone designing a time travel board game?
Q10: Side Topic: New to you.. Have you discovered any older games that you like lately?
Q11: Are there any games that you have never played that you feel most people have?
Q12: Are there any older games that you think most people have not played that you feel they should?
