Design Topic: Luck Mitigation

Todays design topic is about Luck Mitigation. In the spirit of the topic I took a chance by asking people what questions they wanted asked. That was quite risky so I mitigated it by having some planned anyway.

Todays "Lucky" questions are:

Q1: How would you define Luck Mitigation to someone? #BoardGameHour

Q2: Is "mitigation" a nice way of saying reduced to the point where its not important? #BoardGameHour

Q3: What is wrong with having luck without lots of Mitigation in a game? #BoardGameHour

Q4: What is the point in having luck in a game if its heavily mitigated? #BoardGameHour

Q5: What interesting ways could Luck Mitigation be used in designs? What would it bring to the experience of the players? #BoardGameHour

Q6: what factors in mitigation work better than others & why? What systems don't work as well & why? #BoardGameHour

Q7: What is the hardest part about designing Luck Mitigation in a game? #BoardGameHour

Q8: What mechanisms/games should people look at if they want to see luck mitigation in action? #BoardGameHour

Q9:  Why do so many people seem to want less luck in games? #BoardGameHour

Q10: Is luck not a very thematic element in most game (life is not predicable)? Does heavy mitigation effect that feel? #BoardGameHour

Q11: What themes would you like to see with Luck Mitigation as a mechanic? #BoardGameHour

Q12: What game has used Luck Mitigation it in an innovative way? #BoardGameHour

If I am lucky, I will see you later..

What is #Boardgamehour

#boardgamehour takes place on twitter once a week. It's a virtual hangout for people who either love board games or want to know more about the hobby.

So the big question is how does #boardgamehour work?

It's simple, to join in all you need to do is add the #boardgamehour hash-tag to your tweets, during the hour. To see what everyone else is saying just search for #boardgamehour!

Making #boardgamehour easier!

To make this live Twitter discussion easier, I have made a room on Nurph.com which we can all use. All you have to do is make sure you are logged into Twitter then go tohttp://nurph.com/BoardGameHour/chats and log in, using your Twitter account. You don't have to use this, everything will be the same as normal, but if you do us Nurph, it acts like a chat room for twitter and add the Hashtag automatically :0)
For one hour every week, it's time to talk nothing but board games. #boardgamehour happens across the western world Every Monday - start times are:

11am (L.A)
2pm (New York)
7pm (UK)
8pm (Germany)

As long as you have a twitter account, mine is @boardgamehour or @mofbg for instance, you can be part of this rapidly growing movement.
