Evolution & Augmented Reality

This weeks #BoardGameHour topics are:

Evolution

Over time things evolve and get better. Survive of the fittest is all about adapt or die, so which path is board gaming taking?

Personally I think board games have made huge steps forward since the 70's and have the capacity to keep getting better. So many people I have introduced into gaming have fallen in love with a hobby they originally thought was boring.

My tastes as a gamer are always evolving too. The more I teach games the more I want to play games that are easy to learn that have depth as the game goes on!

Literally adding to reality! How could be against it? Well the answer to that is quite a lot of old school gamers. I for one embrace our technological overlords. I can't wait to have board game computer game hybrids that do book keeping and rules for me. I want pieces dice and cards but I can wait for them to come to life on the interactive tabletop surface!

I just hope it happens widely before I get to old...

Imagination & Phases

This week we will be chatting about Phases, defined as:

"a distinct period or stage in a process of change or forming part of something's development."

Lots of things go through phases... Kids... The moon... politics... But do board games and more importantly board gamers?
Are other topic is imagination. I'd leave it up to you to think about what questions I will cover on that subject.

Darkness & Vikings

"The night is dark and full of terrors"... "in the absence of light darkness prevails"

The dark can be very provocative and stir primal emotions in even the most logic of people. Are darkness and light aspects that are used enough in board games? For me the answer is "no in my collection". Darkness seems underused for me and I'd like to work out why that is?

Vikings are at the other end of the scale, I feel they are used as a theme quite regularly, but often only as an overlay. I love the viking theme and yet I don't feel all games with the theme real capture the feel. I'd love to read your views on this!

200th #BoardGameHour

Our next chat will be the 200th I have ran! I love board games and I wanted to be able to chat with people about them on Twitter. I couldn't find any way to do that easily, so all those years ago, I started #Boardgamehour.

I suspected it would never take off, but after only a few weeks we were trending world wide. Everything has calmed down since those heady days, but I still am very proud of the community that takes part every week.

I love this weekly event, but it has not always been easy finding the time to run #BoardGameHour so I am using this milestone to think about if I want to keep it up. I'd love to hear your feedback about if #BoardGameHour in its current format is serving a purpose.

I needed to think of topics to match the occasion, so I am going with "Celebrations" and "Endings". I genuinely hope you have enjoyed my little part of the internet at some point over the last 200 #BoardGameHours . I know I have enjoyed reading your posts and have learnt so much about board gaming because of this weekly event.

If you have an question or topics you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)

Tile placement and maths

This weekend I introduced my son to Carcassone. He is only young and so every time we play a game it's his first time. My partner has been asking to play Isle of Skye for a couple of weeks, but each time I have been a little to tired to get it out. Today we wanted to play a game but I didn't feel my boy would be able to get his head around valuing the tiles for the bidding part of Isle of Skye so we start him out in tile placement with Carcassone. This seems like the right move and he enjoyed it.
This is why our first topic is tile placement games.

I love maths, but after a long day at work some games are a little to intense from a mathematics position. This can be working out optimum moves but more often its book keeping. I'd love to hear where you sit when it comes to maths in board game.

Consumption & Integrated theme

It is our last week of being sponsored by the new rule teaching app Dized. This week I asked for topics from the community. I got a few great request and have gone with two very different topics.

First we will start with Consumption, which will included games about food and drink. What designers and publishers you can't consume enough of and also how many new games you consume.

After that we will be talking about integrated themes. What I mean by this is how well games link there theme and mechanics. If a game has a really good integrated theme, the rules are easier to understand and the game is more fun. Is it something you look out for in games? How can designers integrated themes better?

If you have an question or topics you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)

Space and Set Collection

I like to give you glimpses into my board gaming life sometimes (cause I like you). Today I need to tell you about a topic that leads to some disharmony in my house. Space, the final frontier! It's a theme that when I was young I didn't really enjoy but as I have aged have come to love. I love the infinite possibilities, I love the lack of restrictions and I love the epic-ness that can come from a good sci-fi space opera.

Why does this topic cause unrest in my home then? Well because my partner really doesn't like the theme at all. Its a massive blockade for her. So games that I really enjoy like Cosmic Encounters, Battlestar Galactica and Eminent Domain are hard to get to the table. So it's with a heavy heart that I bring you a topic that is close to my heart but so distant from my table... Space games.

Our other topic is one that I am not in love with but feel can add something to some games. That is Set Collecting. I don't feel there is enough to the mechanic to make it the only part of a game, but as a part of a whole it carries its own. Do you agree with me? Come and join in later to see what other people think too.

If you have an question or topics you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)
