Crowd Funding and Artwork

This week we have two topics that are very close to my heart! You will see why below:

Crowd Funded Games

Crowd funding board games is part of my day to day life. Some of you may know that I offer marketing services and advice to board game companies through my company Wilderland Campaigns. This more often than not involves Kickstarter. Not only that but I am also someone who likes to put spare cash into interesting Kickstarter board games. Crowd funding has become a big part of the board game world and has changed immensely over the last 5/10 years or so.  Is Kickstarter a force for good in the gaming world? Would you publish a game via crowd funding? I look forward to reading your answers on Monday.

Artwork in games

I am a graphic designer and have an eye for art, but would never claim to be an artist. Despite that Artwork in games is so important for me. I love games that look great and really struggle to get into games that are not aesthetically pleasing to me.  What artists do you like? How important is artwork in board games?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

If you have a question you would like me to ask the board game community, drop me a tweet  @BoardGameHour before we start and I'll see if I can add it in :0)

Come and join in our chat

#BoardGameHour is simply an hour long twitter chat all about board games (tabletop games). To join in all you have to do is be on twitter and add #BoardGameHour to your tweets so everyone can see what you are saying :0)

#BoardGameHour Start Time
Monday 11am PST - USA west coast time
Monday 2pm EST - USA east coast time

Making it easier to take part in!

I generally used to use Nurph to host http://nurph.com/BoardGameHour (providing its working) but every now and then it goes down and causes problems.

If this happens, I recommend using http://twubs.com/boardgamehour or http://tweetchat.com/room/boardgamehour or Tweet Deck or Hootsuite to follow the hashtag chat. Of course you can just use twitter but sometimes the amount of #boardgamehour tweets can be challenging to keep up with.

Hope you can make it!

Celtic Theme and Memory

As some of you may know I have been on holiday recently. Last week I was in Scotland and next week I am going to Ireland. My Celtic adventures have inspired your two #boardgamehour topics for this week:

Celtic Themed Games

The Celtic Nations which include Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall and Wales have a rich history and many myths and legends. It is a fertile area for board game design, but which games do it justice? Lets find out during the #BoardGameHour Twitter chat

Memory Games

I hope to remember my holidays for many years, but is using your memory something you like in board games? Which games does having a good memory give you an advantage? Should people be allowed to write down information when playing a board game?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

Roll and Move plus laughable

Your two #boardgamehour topics for this week are:

Roll and Move Games
Many people look down on the humble roll and move mechanic. They think it was a bad design choice back in the 1970's let alone today. But is it really as bad as all that? Are there not games out there that use roll and move well? Lets find out today on #BoardGameHour

Game that make you laugh

I often do topics because I love the subject matter. This is not one of those times. I love comedy and I love to laugh, but I am yet to find a game that is designed to make me laugh that does so well. I love games that facilitate comedy by allowing good player interaction and interesting situations. Personally I can't stand games like CAH because I can be offensive and funny without cards.
What do you think about games designed to be funny?

I love to hear your views on these subjects.

Dexterity games and the summer

As is often the case, our topics for this week are brought about by my life in board games. Here they are:

Dexterity Games
It was my birthday last week and one of the games I requested and received as a present was Flick em Up. The more years I spend in the world of board games the more my tastes expand and also change. I wanted a light game that would have tension and lots of laughs so I picked a dexterity game with a theme I like. I want to hear about how you feel about Dexterity games now :0)

Summer Games

Here in the UK the weather has been lovely recently. This got me thinking about if my gaming habits change with the seasons? Also I am going on a camping holiday soon and have been thinking about what games I can take that will a) not take up much room b) be playable on a small travel table c) survive the trip.

I love to hear your views on all these subjects.

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

Worker Placement & Addiction

Here are our two topics for Monday 10th July 2017.

Worker Placement
It's a classic mechanism! I like it but its not one of my favorites. I think I associate worker placement with dry themeless euro games (not my thing), but I don't think that is fair cause there are many I like. How do you feel about worker placement?

Addictive Games

I for one think I have an addictive personality, which is why I  have never started buying magic the gathering or other lifestyle games. In board gaming my addiction come out in my big collection of games and love on expansions! Some games are much more addictive for me, but why is that?

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

Expansions & Spies

Here are our two topics for Monday 3rd July 2017.

Expansions

I love a good expansion. If I like a game, then I tend to want more of it. I want more options, I want more space to explore. Do all expansions add to a game or are some just a way of making money off of a games popularity? I can't wait to read your opinions

Spy Themed Games

This feels like a theme that can often promise a lot but don't always deliver for me. Is it limited by the scope of hidden identity? Are there spy games that have an interesting twist? Am I secretly working for the Dice Tower as a double agent?

Hope you enjoy the #BoardGameHour chat later :0)

Custom Meeples & Dungeon Crawls

Here are our two topics for Monday 26th June 2017.

Custom Meeples

The internet defines Meeple as "a small figure used as a playing piece in certain board games, having a stylized human form". It has over recent years however come to mean all sorts of shared bits of wood, from food and animals to ghosts and goblins. Is it o.k for games to come with basic pawns anymore? Lets discus.

Dungeon Crawl themed games

Again, the narrow definition of dungeon crawl is "dungeon crawl is a type of scenario in fantasy role-playing games in which heroes navigate a labyrinthine environment (a "dungeon"), battling various monsters, and looting any treasure they may find." but I feel its become more than this now. Is this theme done? does it have more to offer?

Hope you enjoy the board game chat :0)
